It is a term that derives from alchemy. Quite simply, the Great Work is turning base metals, such as lead, into gold. This symbolizes self-change or self-transformation. Usually, this refers to obtaining union with the Divine. However, the great work of turning lead into gold sometimes refers to self-perfection or actualization. Thus, becoming the person you want to be. A perfected individual. There is a process of growth and gradual awakening. Self-knowledge and change is what the magnum opus is all about. Here, I explain the origins of this term, what it means, and I try to explain part of this process and how it works.
